The 10 Karakoy Istanbul Hotel, originally known as Buyuk Balikli Han, was completed in 1875 by the architect Ariditi Razi as a philanthropic endowment intended to generate revenue for the Balikli Greek Hospital. Architecturally, this neoclassical edifice is a distinguished representative of the nineteenth-century Ottoman office khan, a typology characterized by robust masonry facades, rhythmic arched fenestration, and a grand central atrium designed to provide natural light to the interior levels. The building’s layout reflects the rapid commercial expansion of the Galata and Karakoy districts during the late imperial era, prioritizing both structural durability and spatial efficiency for maritime trade businesses. In recent years, the structure underwent a comprehensive restoration led by architect Sinan Kafadar and was successfully repurposed into the 10 Karakoy Istanbul Hotel, a transformation that preserved the original vaulted ceilings and the verticality of the central courtyard while adapting the historic mercantile space for modern luxury hospitality.
