The 15 July Martyrs Bridge, originally inaugurated as the Bosphorus Bridge in 1973, represents a landmark moment in Turkish engineering and urban history as the first permanent structure to span the Bosphorus Strait. Designed by the renowned British firm Freeman Fox and Partners, specifically under the guidance of engineers Sir Gilbert Roberts and William Brown, the bridge is a gravity-anchored suspension system distinguished by its pioneering use of an aerodynamic steel box-girder deck. This design choice not only provided structural stability against high winds but also allowed for a slender, elegant profile that integrates seamlessly into the historic silhouette of Istanbul. Completed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Republic of Turkey, the bridge serves as both a vital transportation artery and a symbol of mid-century modernism, bridging two continents with a main span of 1,074 meters that held the title of the fourth-longest in the world at the time of its opening.
