Arter, situated in the Dolapdere district of Beyoğlu, serves as a prominent contemporary art hub designed by the London-based firm Grimshaw Architects. Opened in 2019 as an initiative of the Vehbi Koç Foundation, the building represents a significant transformation from the institution’s previous home in a historic mansion on Istiklal Avenue to a purpose-built, multi-layered cultural center. The architecture is characterized by its dynamic facade composed of three-dimensional convex and concave ceramic tiles that create an evolving play of light and shadow throughout the day. Designed to engage with its urban surroundings, the structure features large glass openings at the street level to invite the neighborhood inside, while its internal layout offers flexible gallery spaces, performance halls, and a central circulation spine. This design philosophy effectively turns the museum into a vertical extension of the public sphere, blending high-tech architectural precision with the diverse social texture of one of Istanbul’s rapidly evolving districts.
