Democracy and Freedom Island, historically known as Yassıada, serves as a significant site of memory in Turkish political history, primarily recognized as the location for the trials of Prime Minister Adnan Menderes and his colleagues following the 1960 military coup. Renamed in 2013 to reflect its symbolic transition from a place of judicial sorrow to one of civic education, the island underwent a comprehensive architectural transformation led by Arme Concept and was officially reopened in 2020. The contemporary design integrates functional spaces such as the Katre Island Hotel and the Adnan Menderes Congress Center with commemorative structures like the Democracy Museum and the 24-meter-high Lighthouse of Democracy. This revitalization project aims to balance modern administrative functionality with a somber respect for the past, utilizing modernist aesthetics and landscape architecture to narrate the nation’s democratic journey within the unique maritime setting of the Sea of Marmara.
