The Laleli Mosque, situated on Ordu Caddesi in the heart of the Laleli district, stands as a prime example of Ottoman Baroque architecture commissioned by Sultan Mustafa III between 1760 and 1763. Designed by the imperial architect Mehmed Tahir Ağa, the mosque is noted for its elevated position atop a high vaulted basement that originally functioned as a subterranean marketplace, a clever architectural solution to the site’s sloping terrain. The structure’s exterior is defined by its elegant proportions and the use of alternating stone and brick, while the interior features a central dome supported by eight columns and adorned with rich, multi-colored marble and intricate calligraphic details. As part of a larger complex that includes a tomb and a public fountain, the mosque reflects the stylistic transition of the 18th century, blending traditional Ottoman mosque planning with the more ornamental and fluid lines of European-influenced Baroque design.
