The University of Health Sciences, originally founded as the Imperial School of Medicine (Mekteb-i Tıbbiye-i Şahane) under the reign of Sultan Abdülhamid II, represents a pivotal moment in the modernization of Ottoman medical education. Designed by the renowned architects Alexandre Vallaury and Raimondo D’Aronco and inaugurated in 1903, the building is a masterpiece of late 19th-century eclecticism, fusing Neoclassical grandeur with traditional Ottoman architectural elements. Situated prominently in Haydarpaşa, the massive structure is recognizable by its expansive yellow-stone facade and its strategic location overlooking the Bosphorus, serving both as a functional educational facility and a powerful symbol of the empire’s scientific aspirations. Its layout, featuring large courtyards and high-ceilinged corridors, reflects the transition toward contemporary clinical training, a legacy that persists as it continues to function as a prestigious hub for medical studies today.
