Designed by the Levantine architect Alexandre Vallaury and completed in 1897, the Ottoman Public Debt Administration building stands as a defining landmark of late-period Istanbul architecture on the historic peninsula. Originally constructed to house the Düyun-u Umumiye, the structure serves as a prime example of architectural eclecticism, masterfully synthesizing Western compositional principles with Ottoman revivalist details like wide timber-inspired eaves, pointed arches, and elaborate stonework. Its commanding presence in Cağaloğlu, overlooking the Golden Horn, symbolized the immense economic influence of the administration during the waning years of the Empire. Since 1933, the building has served as the Istanbul High School, maintaining its monumental character while transitioning from a center of financial bureaucracy to one of Turkey’s most esteemed educational institutions.
