The Galatasaray University building in Ortaköy, originally part of the Feriye Palaces complex, was designed by the renowned architect Sarkis Balyan and completed in 1871 during the reign of Sultan Abdülaziz. Conceived as secondary residences for the Ottoman royal family to complement the larger imperial palaces along the Bosphorus, the structure exemplifies nineteenth-century Ottoman neoclassicism with its monumental waterfront facade and expansive interior volumes. In 1992, the building was repurposed for educational use, becoming the primary campus for Galatasaray University. Following a devastating fire in 2013 that destroyed much of its timber roof and interior ornaments, the structure underwent an extensive restoration project aimed at preserving its historical integrity while integrating modern structural requirements. Reopened after years of meticulous work, the palace remains a vital piece of Istanbul’s architectural heritage, symbolizing the continuous evolution of the city’s coastal landscape from imperial grandeur to academic excellence.
