The Merkez Efendi Nation’s Library, situated in the heart of Istanbul’s Zeytinburnu district, stands as a testament to the seamless integration of modern design and historical preservation. Designed based on the visionary principles of the late architect Turgut Cansever, the structure was initially planned as an open steel pavilion before being enclosed and repurposed into a vibrant 24-hour library in the mid-2010s. Architecturally, it embodies Cansever’s signature approach of using traditional proportions and wide, protective eaves to create a space that feels both contemporary and deeply rooted in its Ottoman surroundings. Located within the Culture Valley adjacent to the historic cemetery and tomb of its namesake, the building serves as a crucial urban node where the rhythmic interplay of steel and wood invites the public into a serene environment for study, effectively bridging the gap between Istanbul’s rich architectural past and its active cultural present.
