The Hagia Sophia Madrasa, originally commissioned by Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror shortly after the conquest of Istanbul, stands as a significant landmark of Ottoman educational heritage adjacent to the iconic Hagia Sophia. Throughout its long history, the structure underwent several renovations and expansions before it was eventually demolished in the mid-1930s during the site’s transition into a museum. Following a meticulous reconstruction project based on historical records and its 19th-century architectural form, the building was reopened in 2022 to serve as the Hagia Sophia Research Center under Fatih Sultan Mehmet Vakıf University. Architecturally, the campus reflects classical Ottoman design, featuring a traditional rectangular courtyard layout surrounded by domed student cells and a prominent main classroom, or dershane, all characterized by elegant porticos and lead-covered domes that restore the historical silhouette of the Sultanahmet district.
