Originally constructed in 1831 as the Russian Embassy, Narmanlı Han stands as one of the oldest surviving structures on Istiklal Avenue, designed by the Swiss-Italian architect Gaspare Fossati following the Great Fire of Pera. The building exemplifies an Italianate architectural approach with its massive masonry walls and a signature central courtyard that offers a quiet enclave within the dense urban fabric of Beyoğlu. In 1933, the structure was acquired by the Narmanlı brothers and transformed into a vibrant cultural hub, famously serving as a residence and studio for prominent Turkish intellectuals and artists like Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar and Aliye Berger. Despite its modern conversion into a commercial and social space, the han remains a significant monument that captures the intersection of 19th-century diplomatic history and the 20th-century artistic soul of Istanbul.
