The Pera Museum, inaugurated in 2005 by the Suna and İnan Kıraç Foundation, serves as a distinguished cultural landmark situated in the historic Tepebaşı district of Istanbul. The museum is housed in the former Bristol Hotel building, originally designed by architect Achille Manoussos in 1893, which stands as a prime example of late 19th-century neoclassical architecture. During its conversion into a modern art space between 2003 and 2005, architect Sinan Genim meticulously preserved the ornate exterior façade while completely renovating the interior to accommodate contemporary gallery standards. Beyond its architectural significance, the institution is world-renowned for hosting the Orientalist Painting Collection, which includes Osman Hamdi Bey’s masterpiece The Tortoise Trainer, alongside impressive permanent collections of Anatolian Weights and Measures and Kütahya Tiles and Ceramics. This harmonious blend of a historic edifice with modern curatorial needs allows the museum to bridge the gap between the cosmopolitan heritage of old Pera and the contemporary art scene.
