The Şakirin Mosque, situated at the entrance of the Karacaahmet Cemetery in Uskudar, stands as a landmark of contemporary Islamic architecture since its completion in 2009. Commissioned by the Semiha Sakir Foundation, the project features a structural design by architect Husrev Tayla and a groundbreaking interior by Zeynep Fadillioglu, who is recognized as the first woman to design the interior of a mosque. Architecturally, the building bridges the gap between the past and the future by utilizing a sleek aluminum dome and floor-to-ceiling glass walls that allow natural light to flood the prayer hall. Inside, the space is defined by its vibrant turquoise mihrab and a magnificent chandelier composed of glass teardrops, symbolizing a modern interpretation of light and spirituality that sets it apart from traditional Ottoman styles.
