The Süleymaniye Mosque, commissioned by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent and completed by the master architect Mimar Sinan in 1557, stands as a crowning achievement of Ottoman architecture and a symbol of the empire’s golden age. Located on the Third Hill of Istanbul, the structure is celebrated for its harmonious proportions and innovative engineering, featuring a massive central dome supported by semi-domes that create an expansive, light-filled interior. Sinan’s genius is evident in the mosque’s sophisticated acoustics and the unique soot-collection system designed to produce high-quality ink, as well as its integration into a vast külliye complex that originally included a hospital, madrasas, and a public kitchen. With its four slender minarets and elegant use of Iznik tiles and marble, the complex remains a definitive masterpiece that balances monumental grandeur with deep spiritual tranquility.
