As REX Architecture’s first project outside the United States, the Vakko Fashion Center was primarily defined by an intense time constraint that forced an unconventional design process. To meet a nearly impossible deadline, the architects adapted the plans of a recently cancelled project for the Caltech Annenberg Center—which shared a fortuitously similar footprint and floor height with an abandoned hotel skeleton in Istanbul—modifying the construction documents in just four days. This strategic repurposing allowed for the rapid procurement and installation of the internal steel framework within six weeks, ultimately establishing speed as the most critical parameter of the project’s architectural identity.
