Tersane Istanbul stands as a monumental urban regeneration project situated on the Golden Horn, occupying the grounds of the historic Tersane-i Amire, which was founded by Mehmed the Conqueror in 1455 and functioned as the primary naval shipyard of the Ottoman Empire for centuries. Architecturally, the new development, spearheaded by Tabanlıoğlu Architects, emphasizes the adaptive reuse of industrial heritage, transforming former dry docks and stone warehouses into a multifunctional cultural complex that features luxury hospitality, high-end retail, and world-class institutions such as the Sadberk Hanım Museum designed by Grimshaw Architects. By integrating contemporary glass and steel structures with the site’s original masonry and maritime identity, the project seeks to restore public access to two kilometers of the waterfront, effectively bridging Istanbul’s deep-rooted naval history with a modern vision for sustainable urban living.
